In this scenario, the wall was 3” thicker than the framing due to a prior remodel which added furring strips and drywall over the existing lath, horehair plaster, and original trim. Most pocket door kits are designed to mount directly to the floor or to hinge off of a 2x4 jamb using something like a Soss hinge. However, this did present a few additional challenges. Strength: With the cabinet and its hardware bearing on two 3/4” maple face frames, we virtually eliminated any risk of racking in the frontįunction: by swinging out 2-1/4” over finished floor, we would miss the air intake entirely. For this reason, we opted for an inset double face-frame design which had a few major advantages: The clients wanted an out-swing door to maximize the already limited space inside the closet, and the door needed to clear a floor grate, the air intake for the furnace. Now, we had a rough opening ready for a bookcase door, but there were still some obstacles. A double 2圆 header with a double hanger provided adequate load transfer to remove the studs in the way. We doubled up the trimmer studs on either side of the opening with new bottom plates with the point load bearing directly over floor joists. There were load-bearing studs underneath the stair that were supporting the mid-stair landing and the subsequent string to the second story. To allow access from the entry wall where the bookcase door was intended to go, we had to do some fairly intensive demolition. The build is still in progress, but I’m going over the finer points of the install here while the details are fresh with the intention of updating this post after drywall repair, paint, and a few other odds and ends after the holiday. There was a substantial amount of inaccessible space underneath the stair after a closet had been walled off during a previous remodel. We were approached recently by a client who wanted to add a bookcase door under the enclosed stairway of their 1910’s Tudor Revival cottage.

Finally, you might have to reregister or reinstall some of your software. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s almost always inconvenient. That said, reinstalling OS X almost always corrects all but the most horrifying and malignant of problems. The process in El Capitan is (compared with root-canal work, income taxes, or previous versions of OS X) relatively painless. In theory, you should have to install El Capitan only once, or never if your Mac came with El Capitan preinstalled. If any essential OS X files become damaged or corrupted or are deleted or renamed If you replace your internal hard drive with a larger, faster, or solid state drive If you buy an external hard drive and want it to be capable of being your Mac’s startup disk (that is, a bootable disk) If you have a catastrophic hard-drive crash that requires you to initialize (format) or replace your boot drive If your Mac is currently running any version of OS X except El Capitan But you might find occasion to install, reinstall, or use it to upgrade, such as And in a perfect world, that would be the case. The following instructions do triple duty: Of course they’re what you do to install OS X for the first time on a Mac or a freshly formatted hard or solid-state disk. But they’re also what you do if something really bad happens to the copy of OS X that you boot your Mac from, or if the version of OS X on your Mac is earlier than 10.10 El Capitan. In other words, these instructions describe the process for installing, reinstalling, or upgrading OS X El Capitan. You must have Internet access to complete this procedure. If you’ve never had El Capitan on this Mac, the first thing to do is visit the Mac App Store, download El Capitan (it’s free), and install it. Once you’ve done that, here’s how to install, reinstall, or upgrade to El Capitan, step by step:īoot from your Recovery HD partition by restarting your Mac while holding down the Command+R keys. Select Reinstall OS X, and click Continue. The OS X El Capitan splash screen appears.Ī sheet informing you that your computer’s eligibility needs to be verified by Apple appears.Ĭlick Continue to begin the process of installing or reinstalling OS X. If you’re not connected to the Internet, you’ll be asked to choose a Wi-Fi network from the AirPort menu in the top-right corner. The El Capitan software license agreement screen appears. If the D4 light in the instrument display panel lights up and does not blink when you put it in D4 (drive), then the transmission is very likely OK. The transmission does have a issue with shifting when cold, but changing to the new ATF will correct a lot of that. You have the same transmission and it is not one of the problematic ones that someone here referred to. I have a 97 Accord with 185 k miles on it and have had the same issues with the distributor O-ring and the leaking heater hose. Nicole, I fear you are about to make a costly mistake. When trying to find this person what do you look for? I have started the search for a new car and I am in need of a mechanic for that now, too. I love this car and would do anything to have it back but I don’t seem to have that option. I am also kind of stuck because having it towed somewhere is going to be costly. scrap I mentioned your suggestion to a few people and nobody will do it. I am fresh out of college so I need as much as I can get, but how do I know whether or not I will get more for it from the trans mechanic vs. The mechanic at AMMCO wants to buy the car, which brings me to another question… how do I know what to charge!!! There isn’t exactly an option in the Kelly Blue book for a car with these issues. I wish I knew more about cars, and I wish I had a teacher other than Youtube, but I don’t so maybe it is time for me to let go (even though the mere thought makes me cringe). The A/C hasn’t worked in over a year and for the past 2 1/2 years I have had to bang on the dash where the temp gauge is to get it to work. When it is warm outside and I drive the car there is a strong odor of gasoline. I realized that the transmission has not been the only issue as of late. Since writing the original post I have had time for the shock to wear off. This is not something I have ever believed in. I don’t live in a nice area, and the mechanics around here are used to doing the cheapest possible thing to buy time. I did later send them thank you’s with gift cards, but my point is, I have tried the independent mechanics in the area and I haven’t had any luck. I go to the dealership because one night I broke down and 3 of the mechanics there stayed after hours to fix the car and asked for nothing in return. Here is the issue, I don’t have one near me that I actually trust. Thank you for the great answers! From the last 2 posts, I have gathered that independent mechanics are the way to go. If the engine has been damaged, then I think you should move on. Be sure to mention that to the mechanic doing the evaluation, he might do a few tests to judge the state of the engine. The remove/replace cost, plus the purchase price, might not pencil out, but be aware of the option.īut do I remember that there was some issue about low oil or low coolant, or both? That should be a top consideration. Cheaper, less reliable, but a potential solution which either the general mechanic or the transmission shop could advise you about. If they quote you close to $2000 for the transmission rebuild, think about what $2000 would buy you for another comparable car (which might have a transmission ready to die).Īnother option is a used transmission from a salvage yard. If the signs are good, then find that transmission specialist. Make sure the mechanic knows you are trying to make a decision about the transmission. If it looks and runs good, I’d suggest that before you decide to even consider replacing the transmission, find a local independent general mechanic who can spend half an hour evaluating the car to identify any issues which may not be evident to you. If instead the car looks ragged, or you’d be uncomfortable showing up at that new job you will get after graduation, then maybe you’ll decide to give it up. If the engine, body, interior, and glass are at least good, then it may well be worth it. Whether your car is worth the trans rebuild is uncertain. It probably isn’t that simple, but there’s a chance. And at an independent, you have a good chance that they will actually tell you if there’s an alternative solution, like some electronic sensor for example. The diagnosis may be the same, but the integrity will be vastly superior. Find a local independent business instead. The only caveat is that when you use special dashes (as opposed to a regular minus sign), Excel automatically treats the information in your cell as text. You may be familiar with using em- and en-dashes from working with Word. If you want to insert an en dash, press and hold Alt + 0150 or Alt + 8211. If the sequence doesnt work, press NumLock on the numeric keypad. Press and hold Alt + 0151 or Alt + 8212 on the numeric keypad. You could also use the Special Characters tab of the Symbol dialog box to add the dashes. Position the cursor in a text box, placeholder, table cell or shape where you want to insert a check mark symbol. To insert an en-dash in your document, hold down the Alt key and type 0150 on the numeric keypad an em-dash is produced by holding down the Alt key and typing 0151. The en dash is sometimes also used in the same way as an em dash, especially in UK English in this case, it takes a space on either side. The em-dash is typically used in sentences, as a dash between clauses. The longer em dash () is used to separate extra information or mark a break in a sentence. Em dashes set apart clauses in a sentencelike this. On a PC, hold down the Alt key and type 0150. You may be familiar with using em- and en-dashes from working with Word. En dashes show duration or range, as in 9:005:00. You could also use the Special Characters tab of the Symbol dialog box to add the dashes. As mentioned earlier, you can insert an en dash by holding down the Alt key and typing 0150 on the numeric keypad. Wider still is the em-dash, which is just as wide as a lowercase m. To insert an en-dash in your document, hold down the Alt key and type 0150 on the numeric keypad an em-dash is produced by holding down the Alt key and typing 0151. Most computer users use just a single character, -, the so-called hyphen-minus (the usual minus character you have on your keyboard), which is, technically. An en-dash is typically used to denote ranges of numbers. The term em dash comes from the field of typographyan em is a width equivalent to the height of a given font. It is wider than an en dash () or a hyphen (-). A longer dash is called an en dash, because it is the same width as a lowercase n. The en-dash can be created by pushing down the ALT key and typing 0150, while the 3-em dash is created by typing six hyphens. The long dash is the widest of the three horizontal marks that may be used in the middle of a sentence. For instance, you get one type of dash when you press on the minus key-it is a dash that is very narrow. The only difference between the dashes is their width. Typographers use different dashes for different purposes.
